Just starting yoga? These five foundational poses will build your strength, flexibility, and confidence on the mat.
1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Stand tall with feet together, arms at your sides. This is the foundation of all standing poses. Focus on pressing all four corners of your feet into the mat.
2. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
From hands and knees, lift your hips toward the ceiling to form an inverted V shape. One of the most recognized poses in yoga — it strengthens the arms, stretches the hamstrings, and calms the mind.
3. Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)
Step one foot forward into a lunge, raise your arms overhead. This pose builds strength in the legs and opens the chest. Hold for 5 breaths and switch sides.
4. Child's Pose (Balasana)
Kneel on the mat, sit back on your heels, and stretch your arms forward on the floor. This is your resting pose — return to it whenever you need a break.
5. Corpse Pose (Savasana)
Lie flat on your back, arms slightly away from your body, eyes closed. This final relaxation pose is more important than it looks. It allows your body to absorb everything you've practiced.
A Note on Your Mat
The right mat makes a big difference for beginners. You want something with enough grip that you're not slipping in Warrior I, and enough cushioning to protect your knees in Child's Pose.
Our Beginner Yoga Mat and Cork Yoga Mat are both designed with exactly this in mind — non-slip, cushioned, and built to support every pose.
